MEN'S LACROSSE WINS FOURTH-STRAIGHT; KNOCK OFF ST. ANDREWS 11-5 FOR FIRST LEAGUE WIN

LAURINBURG, N.C.— Pfeiffer University built a five goal advantage at halftime and coasted to an 11-5 Conference Carolinas men’s lacrosse victory over host St. Andrews Presbyterian College to retain the ‘Laurinheimer Cup’ on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior Dan Mesler (Branchport, N.C.) tallied a hat trick as the Falcons (5-5 Overall, 1-2 Conf.) won their fourth consecutive game. The Knights (2-7, 1-1) were unable to string together two straight wins.

Pfeiffer held SAPC to just five goals as the hosts committed a season-worse 33 turnovers. The Falcons retained the ‘Laurinheimer Cup’ after winning it back for the first time since 2001 last year. St. Andrews has won the annual showdown 11-of-16 years since the Cup was started in 1995.

Freshman Bobby Murray (Miami, Fla.) led the Knights offensively with two goals while senior Kyle Carnaggio (Pasadena, Md.) had one goal and one assist.

After the two teams traded goals on their respective first shots of the game, junior Michael Thomas (Stevensville, Md.) scored an unassisted goal at the 10:56 mark of the first quarter to give SAPC its last lead at 2-1. The Falcons scored the final three goals of the opening period to take the lead for the remainder of the day. Freshman Ben Nielsen (Orlando, Fla.) scored both of his goals in that stretch as Pfeiffer led, 4-2, after 15 minutes.

Nielsen handed out two assists to go along with his two goals for a game-high four point performance.

Pfeiffer pulled away with a 4-1 second quarter as the Falcons four consecutive unanswered goals was capped by a senior Chad Olsen (Great Mills, Md.) goal with 6.5 seconds left to give the visitors an 8-3 halftime cushion. Pfeiffer doubled up the Knights, 2-1, in the third before the squad’s traded one goal apiece in the fourth to pull away for the six-goal victory.

Falcons’ junior goalkeeper Matt McShea (Pittsford, N.Y.) made a game-high 11 saves. SAPC freshman counterpart Kyle Davitt (Shoreview, Minn.) had 10 stops in the losing cause.

Pfeiffer held a commanding 45-28 shot advantage including a team-high seven shots by senior Jameson Schultz (High Point, N.C.), who finished with one goal and one assist. Sophomore Justin Rose (Rochester, N.Y.) scored twice while senior Sam Mayes (Parker, Colo.) and junior Robert Adams (Concord, N.C.) scored once. Senior Derrick Ensor (Finksburg, Md.) and junior Nick Berkompas (Webster, N.Y.) each chipped in with one helper.

Freshman Riley Fink (University Park, Md.), who leads SAPC with 12 goals on the season, scored the opening goal of the game on a pass from Carnaggio but was held scoreless for the rest of the game. Senior Aren Montgomery (San Antonio, Texas) and sophomores Geoff Webber (Charlotte, N.C.) and Chris Michela (Oak Hill, Va.) all got in the scorebook with one assist apiece.

St. Andrews next visits Conference Carolinas rival and No. 9 nationally Ranked Queens University of Charlotte on Saturday at 2 p.m., while Pfeiffer hosts No. 10 Mars Hill College at the same time Saturday.
