MEN'S VOLLEYBALL COMEBACK ATTEMPT FALLS SHORT AS LIMESTONE SNEAKS AWAY WITH 3-2 WIN

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Limestone’s Scott Schweihofer (Marysville, MI) picked up a match high 33 kills leading the Saints to a 3-2 (28-30, 30-28, 32-30, 23-30, 15-12) victory over Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas men’s volleyball on Thursday night. The win pushes Limestone to 12-9 overall, 4-4 in league play while the Falcons fall to 7-13, 1-6.

The Falcons scored the set one win taking a 15-13 lead at the halfway point on a Michael Dhalle (Phelps, NY) kill. Schweihofer quickly brought the Saints back to 15-all before setter Evan Fullerton (Ambridge, PA) put the Falcons up for good with a sneak attack at 27-26. Micah Bortner (Dallastown, PA) picked up the final kills to end set one.

Limestone battled back to grab the next two sets for a 2-1 match lead. With Andrew Pile (Macungi, PA) serving, the Saints rattled off eight straight point taking advantage of four attack errors by Pfeiffer. Limestone kept that lead until the Falcons took advantage of two Saints miscues for a 23-23 contest. C.J. Shearer (Longwood, FL) put home a kill at 27-26 as Schweihofer started to heat up with the sets final three kills evening the match at one game apiece.

Set three needed extra points to allow the Saints to grab the one set advantage. Pfeiffer’s Eric Edelman (Henrietta, NY) put home one of his eight kills on the night at 10-10 before Mikee DeJager (Oviedo, FL) knotted the contest at 24-24 late in set three. A handful of Pfeiffer errors and four more Schweihofer kills, including the last two, allowed the Saints to grab a 32-30 set victory.

The Falcons stormed back for the only convincing set win of the night forcing a fifth set with a 30-23 win. Pfeiffer took the lead for good with a kill by Kyle Mariano (Kendall Park, NJ) just nine points in before an Andrew Whalen (Apopka, FL) kill forced a Limestone timeout. With an ace sandwiched in between a pair of Saints attacking errors, Limestone burned its final timeout at 15-6 as the Falcons cruised from there. Edelman put home three more kills while Clancy Gay (Cincinnati, OH) and Dhalle each registered a pair of late kills sending the match to its deciding set.

Limestone was given a quick boost to the start of set five on a pair of solo blocks by DeJager that stifled the Falcons attack. Pfeiffer got as close as 8-6 on a Gay kill before Kevin Hart (Menifee, CA) and Schweihofer secured the match with late kills in a 15-12 set and 3-2 match win.

Behind Schweihofer’s 33 kills, DeJager was the only other Saint to finish in double digits with 11. For Pfeiffer, Dhalle and Gay each had 14 while Whalen had 10. Fullerton led all setters with 55 assists while libero Danny Gruszcyk (Orlando, FL) had a match high 21 digs. Pfeiffer out-blocked Limestone 17-12.

The Falcons will return home on Wednesday playing in their final home match of 2010. Pfeiffer will host Lees-McRae inside the Merner Gym beginning at 7:00 p.m.
