MISENHEIMER, N.C. – A two-out rally in the top of the seventh inning led Pfeiffer University past Erskine College 3-2 in the first elimination contest in day two of the 2010 Conference Carolinas softball tournament. Mariah Chalk came up with the two-out single that drove home Kylee Nichols for the eventual game-winner. Pfeiffer improves to 21-28 overall while Erskine ends their season at 23-23-1. Pfeiffer is currently in action against Anderson in another elimination game (1:00 p.m. start).
The Lady Falcons scored solo runs in the second and third frames as Nichols singled home Sam Taylor with two outs. In the third, a two-out bomb by Heather Nobles put Pfeiffer up a pair.
Erskine’s two runs came in the home half of the fourth as Lindsey LaPrad delivered a two-run double down the third base line. Courtney Davis led off the inning with a hit by pitch while Larissa Shannon deposited a double to the gap in right-center.
Pfeiffer’s seventh began with a quick strikeout and induced pop up by Lady Fleet starter Kelsey Spurrier. Nichols kept the inning alive reaching on an error at third before Johnson came up with a single down the left-field line. Chalk then followed with her base hit to left for the crucial third run.
The Lady Fleet threatened in the seventh with the bases loaded and two-out, but reliever Alison Braswell got a popup to second to end the contest. Braswell went the final 1.1 innings for the win. Melanie Conklin factored in the no-decision going 5.2, scattering two runs on five hits with five strikeouts.
