AASU SWEEPS WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL 3-0; FINAL MATCH OF CATAWBA INVITATIONAL AT 3:30 P.M.

MISENHEIMER, N.C. Armstrong Atlantic used a pair of 11-kill performances by Torrie Bevolo (St. Louis, MO) and Brittany Wolf (Bethlehem, GA) as the Pirates swept Pfeiffer University 3-0 (17-25, 10-25, 18-25) in the day two opening match of the 2010 Catawba Invitational. AASU improves to 2-1 on the young season while the Lady Falcons remain winless at 0-3.

AASU jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opening set as Wolf threw down a pair of early kills before a kill by Kristina Mordini (Freeport, IL) brought Pfeiffer within five at 10-5. Two more Bevolo kills and a Gwen Clarke (Superior, CO) point gave the Pirates a 16-10 lead at the halfway mark of set one. Mordini, along with Milana Mervosh (Roebuck, SC), had late kills trying to bring Pfeiffer back, but another Bevolo kill and Lady Falcon error ended the initial set.

In the middle stanza, Megan Pando (Oviedo, FL) started off with a service ace while Bevolo tossed down two more of her 11 kills as the Pirates jumped out to another quick 5-0 advantage. AASU controlled all of set two up 23-7 on another Wolf kill before a couple of Pfeiffer errors gave the Pirates a quick 25-10 set two victory.

A turn around seemed to be working early for Pfeiffer as Abbie Ovbey (Mt. Gilead, NC) and Mervosh each registered a kill to put the black and gold up early, but AASU came right back with six-straight points to reclaim the lead for good. Pfeiffer again got to within three at 12-9 thanks to Mordini, but kills from Wolf and teammate Amanda Jones (Marietta, GA) helped the Pirates pull away for good.

In addition to Bevolo and Wolf, Pando chipped in with a match high 31 assists. For Pfeiffer, Ovbey led the way with seven kills while Mervosh and Mordini each had five. Colleen Wands (Apex, NC) had all 23 assists for the Lady Falcons.

Pfeiffer will play in its final contest of the 2010 Catawba Invitational at 3:30 p.m. today against Lander. AASU will conclude with host Catawba at 1:30 p.m.
