MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Junior Alyssa Wombwell (Grand Blanc, MI) registered the first hat trick of the season as Pfeiffer University rolled Erskine College 5-2 in Conference Carolinas women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at N.E. Lefko Field. The win evens the Lady Falcons record at 3-3 overall, 1-1 in league play, while the Lady Fleet drop to 1-3, 1-1.
Pfeiffer needed just 14 seconds to grab a 1-0 lead as Serae Mele (Rio Rancho, NM) sent a nice cross pass over to Wombwell who went top shelf for the game’s first goal. Just 15 minutes later, Wombwell assisted on Devon Klyce’s (Cape Coral, FL) first career tally as the Lady Falcons carried a 2-0 lead into the half.
Erskine cut into the 2-0 lead a couple of minutes into the second half as Chinaka Springer (Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago) scored from a Kimrey Angotti-Smith (Goose Creek, SC) assist that started with a Molly Harpe (Anderson, SC) corner kick.
Wombwell soon pushed the Pfeiffer lead back to two with an unassisted goal in the 55th minute before Springer made it another one goal contest with her second of the day exactly nine minutes later.
The Lady Falcons would notch a pair of late goal to seal their first conference win of the season. Wombwell put home her third tally on assists from Rachael Shapelow (Swan Point, MD) and Mele in the 69th minute before Klyce notched her second of the day, on a rebound from a Tish Patino (East Bend, NC) shot, in the 87th minute.
Jamie Alcala (Fredericksburg, VA) made four saves in the win while Si’Ara Washington (Mount Pleasant, SC) turned away a half-dozen shots for the Lady Fleet. Pfeiffer out-shot Erskine 22-18 overall, 18-11 with shots on goal.
The Lady Falcons now step out of conference play on Wednesday to travel over to UNC-Pembroke for a 7:00 p.m. match with the Lady Braves. Live video and live stats will be available through www.gofalconsports.com.
