PAIR OF FRESHMAN LEAD WOMEN'S GOLF TO FOURTH-PLACE FINISH IN FALCON CUP TOURNAMENT

BADIN, N.C. – Carrying a two-stroke lead over Wingate into the final round of the 2010 Pfeiffer Falcon Cup, UNC-Pembroke held on to defeat Newberry by a pair of shots to claim the tournament’s title. The Braves improved on Monday’s 309 by nine shots to turn in 609 holding off the Wolves 611. Wingate concluded the top three finishing with an identical 311 for a 622 total. The Bulldogs Ashley Denton took medalist honors with a final round 69 (143 total) at the par 70, 6,057-yard Badin Inn Golf Resort.

UNCP was led by Katja Dammann’s 71 today, 146 for the tournament. All four Braves scores counting on Tuesday were in the 70’s followed by Meghan Moore 149 (74/75), Shauna Walor’s 154 (79/75) and Dana Watkins carding a 160 (81/79).

Maria Luz Besio paced Newberry as the Wolves jumped over Wingate for the runners-up spot. Besio finished fifth overall turning in a 73 today for a two-day total of 151. Denton concluded three shots in the clear of Dammann for medalist honors.

Host Pfeiffer finished fourth behind Angela Gimenez’s 155 (79/76). Steph Peareth concluded one shot back at 156 (77/79) followed by Jackie McMenimon’s 157 (80/77).

The top five finishers were named to the all-tournament team led by Denton. The only four include Dammann, Moore, Samantha Pugh-Gilder of Wingate and Besio.
