MISENHEIMER, N.C. Ė A pair of first half goals, one in the first 65 seconds, and solid defense led Pfeiffer University to a 2-0 victory over Mount Olive College in Conference Carolinas menís soccer action on Tuesday afternoon. Fourth time was the charm for both teams as the previous three attempts to play were rained out. The Falcons win their third-straight improving to 4-6-3 overall, 4-3-1 in league play, while the Trojans fall to 3-12-1, 1-7.
The first strike of the match came just 1:05 in as Johannes Tisell (Moindal, SWEDEN) scooped up a Mount Olive turnover at midfield and sent a touch pass to Alex Landim (Brockton, MA) who beat Trojan keeper Jamie Carano (Charlotte, NC) for the 1-0 lead.
Tisell sparked the second goal 25 minutes later eventually chipping a pass over to Ethan Sacco (Concord, NC) inside the six-yard box. Sacco quickly bumped a pass over to Jeff Cannon (Lewis Center, OH) with his chest, allowing Cannon to find the back of the net for the two-goal advantage.
Mount Olive out-shot Pfeiffer 15-12 overall, but the Falcons held the 7-5 edge with shots on goal. Three different Trojans fired three shots apiece as John Mendoza (Shallotte, NC) put two of his on cage. Alex Moreno (Huntersville, NC) earned the shutout in goal for the Falcons turning around five Mount Olive shots.
Pfeiffer now returns to action in less than 24 hours hosting Lander in non-conference action on senior day Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. The Falcons will honor nine seniors before the match.
