SAVANNAH, G.A. – Sixth-seeded Pfeiffer University surrendered three second half goals to third-seeded UNC-Pembroke falling by a final of 3-0 in the first round of the NCAA Southeast Region Tournament on Friday afternoon at Armstrong Atlantic’s AT&T Field. The Lady Braves move on to face the hosts and second-seeded Lady Pirates on Sunday improving to 16-3-2 while the Lady Falcons see their 2010 season come to an end at 13-6-2.
Both teams played to a draw in the first 45 minutes as Pfeiffer held an 8-6 shots advantage, 4-2 on goal. Alyssa Wombwell (Grand Blanc, MI) had two of the four shots on net turned away by UNCP’s Britney Bennett, while Sara McCormack (Charlotte, NC) and Lindsey Godwin (Raleigh, NC) had the other two. Lady Falcon net minder Amanda Wemple (Hayden Lake, ID) turned away shots by the Lady Braves Faye Corbett and Andrea Collen for scoreless soccer after a half.
UNC-Pembroke put the first goal on the board 5:08 into the second half as Anna Svensson sent a pass over the Pfeiffer defense to teammate Sheena Mature who beat Wemple one-on-one. Just under nine minutes later, Corbett assisted on Rebecca Womack’s eighth of the year chipping a pass across the box for the two-goal lead. Womack turned around just three minutes later picking up the helper as Anna Zetterlund notched her fifth of the season to finish off the three goals in 11-minute span.
UNCP fired off 15 second half shots for a final advantage of 21-17. Pembroke took the only corner kick of the match in the first half while Bennett posted the shutout in net turning away seven Pfeiffer scoring attempts. Wemple blocked nine shots for Pfeiffer in the loss. The Lady Falcons were whistled for 16 fouls in the match to UNCP’s six.
