RESULTS VS. ST. ANDREWS (2009-01-19 00:00:00)

Laurinburg, NC - Pfeiffer University was able to hang on after building an 18-point halftime lead en route to a 103-95 Conference Carolinas men’s basketball victory on Monday night despite St. Andrews Presbyterian College scoring 64 second-half points.
The Falcons – who rank second in the nation in points per game – posted their third straight conference victory improving to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in the league. The Knights scored a season-high 95 points but were unable to overcome 14 turnovers in the first half as St. Andrews lost its sixth straight dipping to 3-12 and 1-8.
The contest started out even with four ties and seven lead changes in the first 12 minutes. Pfeiffer used a decisive 17-1 run late in the first half to take the lead for the remainder of the evening. The Falcons made 6-of-8 shots over the three minute outburst and a senior Robert McGriff (Lancaster, S.C.) layup in the final seconds of the opening period extended the visitors lead to 18 points (49-31) at halftime.
The Knights showed they were not going down without a fight, nailing a trio of three-pointers in the first 90 seconds of the second half. Colby Poe (Bennettsville, SC) hit the first one and Kurt Fenderbosch (Myrtle Beach, SC) sunk the next two as St. Andrews cut the halftime deficit in half at 49-40 with the quick 9-0 surge. A Taiwon Grooms (Landover, MD) basket at the 15 minute mark capped a blazing 20-6 rally that got the Knights within four points (55-51).
The Falcons, who shot an impressive 48.0% in the game including 57.6% in the second half, slowly built their lead back up to 17 points (87-70) before St. Andrews attempted another last comeback. The Knights went on a 13-2 run to make the game a two possession game with three minutes to go.
A couple minutes later Fenderbosch swished his fifth 3-pointer from beyond NBA-range to close the score to within five, 100-95, with 20 seconds left. St. Andrews made 11 three-pointers in the game but missed their final two attempts in the final seconds and McGriff converted on 3-of-4 free throw attempts to close out the eight-point Pfeiffer victory.
The Falcons had 12 players score in the game including five reaching double figures. McGriff had a team-high 21 points and sophomore Chris Donald (Randolph, MA) scored 14. Sophomores Chris Woods (Thomasville, NC) and Duke Johnson (Ville Platte, LA) and freshman Davon Gilliard (Charleston, SC) all tallied 12 points.
Woods had a team-high eight rebounds as Pfeiffer barely won the battle of the boards, 42-41. The Falcons turned the ball over fewer times, 23-17, and had more steals, 12-7.
Zack Garst (Huntersville, NC) scored 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for his first collegiate double-double. He added a career-high five block shots and a team-high two steals.
Grooms scored a team-high 24 points and Fenderbosch connected for a career-high 23 points including five 3-pointers. Poe was the fourth SAPC player to reach double figures with 15 points. Grooms just missed a double-double with eight boards.
The Knights made half of their field goals in the second half (22-of-44) as they shot 45.1% in the game. Senior Charles Phillips (Decatur, GA) handed out a career-high 10 assists as St. Andrews dished out a season-high 21 assists.
