SALISBURY, N.C. – Winston-Salem State University made it 2-for-2 since returning to division two play with a 77-63 victory over Pfeiffer University in non-conference men’s basketball action at Catawba’s Goodman Gym. The Rams open their season 2-0 with a division one-like roster stepping back from the NCAA’s highest level while the Falcons even to 2-2.
WSSU led from the opening tip as Dominic Alston (Bunn, NC) led one of four Rams in double figures with 20 points. Shelton Carter (Greensboro, NC) followed with 18, Lamar Monger (Ahoskie, NC) put in 14 while Stephon Platt (Laurinburg, NC) deposited 11. For Monger, 11 of his 14 points came from the charity stripe. For the Falcons, Jeff Pettiway (Edgewood, MD) led all scorers with 21 points on the night.
The Rams had as much as a 25 point lead in the first half shooting 40% from the field. Pfeiffer shot better in the second half, 30% for the contest, but made just six three-pointers to WSSU’s 11. Both teams combined for 56 fouls in the whistle-laden contest.
Pfeiffer has a quick turnaround before their next contest on Sunday afternoon. The Falcons will wrap up the 2010 Catawba Classic tangling with the host Indians at 3:00 p.m.
