MEN'S BASKETBALL ERASES ANOTHER 17 POINT SECOND HALF DEFICIT IN 79-70 WIN OVER BARTON; WOODS POSTS DOUBLE-DOUBLE

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – A basket by Pfeiffer University’s Chris Woods (Thomasville, NC) gave the Falcons their first and only needed lead of the night in a 79-70 Conference Carolinas men’s basketball comeback win over Barton College on Monday night. Pfeiffer trailed by as much as 17 with 14:34 as the victory moves them to 5-4, 3-0 atop the league’s standings. The Bulldogs suffer their first loss of the new year falling to 7-5, 2-2.

A jumper by Barton’s Gerald Boston (Burlington, NC) put the visitors up 17, 53-36, with 14:34 remaining to cap off a 7-0 run. A three-point by the Falcons Josh Humphrey (Matthews, NC) started the comeback as Pfeiffer drained six of their eight triples over the final 14 minute span.

Each team traded baskets midway through the second half as a dunk by Evan Shelton (Charlotte, NC) and jumper by Greg Mammal (San Antonio, TX) kept the Bulldogs up 14 crossing the halfway point of the period. A quick floater by Jeff Pettiway (Edgewood, MD) and three by Reggie Hollinger (Orlando, FL) put the hosts within seven with 8:33 to play.

Three Barton turnovers helped keep the Falcons within seven until Yuki Yamaguchi (Tokyo, JAPAN) hit another crucial long range shot slicing the Bulldog lead down to four. Barton responded with a pair of Boston free throws and triple by Mike Flowers (Copenhagen, DENMARK), but Pfeiffer roared back on a 9-0 run grabbing the lead for good. Humphrey sparked the run with his third and final three of the night while Hollinger added two more free throws. Woods and Hollinger each threw down hard dunks over the final few minutes.

Barton started the night on an 8-0 run, forcing an early Falcon timeout, before jumping out to a 17-4 lead on a layup by Jaren Haley (Woodbridge, VA). Woods helped trimmed the deficit down to six at the 12:45 mark, but another Boston jumper had the lead back to 16 with 6:35 to play before the break. Pfeiffer went into the locker room after a 13-5 run to close out the half, trailing the Bulldogs 41-34 at the intermission.

Woods led all scorers with a game-high 25 points to go along with his dozen rebounds. Hollinger followed with 17 while Humphrey contributed with 15. For the Bulldogs, Jarrett Jernigan (Virginia Beach, VA) paced the visitors with 16 while Boston and Haley came up with 14 and 11 respectively.

Barton shot 51% from the field in the loss, but went just 1-for-4 from behind the arc in the second half to conclude the night 7-of-15. Pfeiffer drained eight triples on the night making up the difference at the charity stripe shooting 81% in the second half.

Pfeiffer will now take a couple of days off before hosting Mount Olive on Thursday night. Tip time is set for 7:30 p.m. inside the Merner Gym.
