MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Mount Olive saw a 17-point second-half lead sliced to four points, but free throws by Andrea Jones and Jasmine Whitby in the final 25 seconds halted the comeback as the Trojans held on for a 76-69 victory over Pfeiffer in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball Thursday at Misenheimer, N.C.  Whitby notched her third consecutive double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds, while Jones added 20 points. Both Mount Olive and Pfeiffer entered the contest tied for third in the conference standings. The visiting team has won each of the last three meetings between the two teams.

Mount Olive (6-4 overall, 3-1 Conference Carolinas) scored 11 unanswered points in a span of 87 seconds at the end of the first half and beginning of the second half to take a 39-22 lead with 19:19 remaining in the game. Shequanta McGee, who was a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range on the night, hit a pair of three’s during the run.

Pfeiffer (3-7, 2-2) chipped away at the lead and Christina Harvey’s three-point play pulled the Falcons within 63-59 with 5:02 remaining. The Trojans used a 7-0 run to build the lead back to double figures as Whitby and Jones converted layups and McGee hit a three-pointer with 3:24 left.

After Pfeiffer pulled within seven, Joneiqua Gary’s three-pointer gave Mount Olive a 73-63 lead with 1:50 left to play. The Falcons cut the margin to six after a layup by Kellie Rhoney and a pair of free throws by Celeste Caudill.

Pfeiffer was under the limit and committed three fouls in 18 seconds to put Mount Olive on the free throw line. The Trojans missed the front end of a one-and-one with 36 seconds left and Brittany Cox’s short jumper with 26 seconds left brought the Falcons within 73-69.

Jones was fouled immediately and hit 1-of-2 free throws to make it a five-point game. Pfeiffer got the offensive rebound on a missed three-point attempt, but Brittany Miller forced a turnover and Whitby sealed the win with a pair of free throws with three seconds left.

In the first half, Whitby’s layup with 13:24 remaining broke a 6-6 tie and Mount Olive led the remainder of the game. Jones hit a three-pointer and Whitby added another layup to give the Trojans their first double-digit lead of the game at 21-11 with 6:29 remaining.

Three-pointers by Cox and Caudill helped Pfeiffer get as close as six points. But Whitby knocked down a three-pointer with 46 seconds left and McGee’s three with three seconds left gave Mount Olive a 34-22 halftime lead.

McGee hit another three-pointer 13 seconds into the second half and Miller added a basket 28 seconds later to give the Trojans their biggest advantage.

McGee finished with 14 points and six rebounds, while Jones also pulled down six boards. Whitby, who dished out a team-high five assists, was 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Thursday’s double-double was her fifth of the season.
