DEFENSE FORCES 26 TURNOVERS; WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CRUISES AT ST. ANDREWS 84-55

LAURINBURG, N.C. – Sophomore guard Brittany Cox (Winston-Salem, NC) tallied a game-high 24 points leading Pfeiffer University to a convincing 84-55 win over St. Andrews in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball at Harris Court. Defense played a huge role for Pfeiffer as they improve to 5-9 overall, 4-4 in league play. The loss keeps the Lady Knights winless at 0-12, 0-6.

Pfeiffer wasted no time in grabbing the lead off the opening tip. Kellie Rhoney (Catawba, NC) grabbed the jump ball, went the distance, drew contact and drained both ensuing free throws. The visitors held the lead for the entire first half going up by a dozen with nine minutes remaining on a hook shot by Christina Harvey (Locust Grove, VA). Minutes later, Cox drained three of her 17 first-half points from long range giving Pfeiffer a 29-16 advantage.

Defense took over late in the second half for the Lady Falcons as they held St. Andrews scoreless for more than five minutes. On the offensive side of the floor, Vontreece Hayes (Thomasville, NC) dropped in five quick points in a two minute span that helped put Pfeiffer up 19, 35-16 with 4:27 until the break. A pair of free throws by Kia Rice (Salisbury, NC) and Shelley Reese (Brown Summitt, NC) with under a minute left guided the Lady Falcons into the locker room with a 43-21 halftime lead.

The second half saw Pfeiffer open up its 22-point halftime lead as a jumper by Vontenea Williams (Granite Falls, NC) put the visitors up 19 just five minutes in. Solid defense again held the Lady Knights scoreless for several minutes as another layup by Harvey pushed the advantage to 60-26 coming up on the halfway point of the period. The Lady Falcons finished off the evening with a pair of free throws by Hayes and another triple by Cox seconds later.

The Lady Falcon defense forced 26 St. Andrews turnovers coming up with 16 steals. Pfeiffer registered 20 points off of those multiple turnovers.

Pfeiffer will look to continue their winning ways on Saturday traveling to Belmont Abbey for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
