MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Effective Tuesday, February 1st, Mary Ann Sunbury will assume the position of athletic director at Pfeiffer University to fill the void created by Bobby Stewart’s reassignment within the institution. Stewart will maintain supervisory responsibility over athletics. In addition, Micki Thompson has been promoted to Director of Compliance and SWA while Jason Smith, head men’s soccer coach, has also been promoted to Assistant Athletic Director of Operations.
Sunbury came to Pfeiffer in 1985 as an assistant professor of physical education while coaching women’s basketball and tennis. Over the years, she also coached women’s volleyball and added men’s tennis to her resume before moving into the administration side of athletics for the 1995-96 season.
Coaching continued for Sunbury through 2007 when she retired from sidelines after leading women’s tennis to six conference championships with multiple coach of the year honors. Sunbury was the first active coach to be voted into Pfeiffer’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. With student-athletes comprising of more than 60 percent of the Pfeiffer campus, Sunbury’s knowledge and leadership with NCAA compliance will benefit everyone involved with Pfeiffer athletics.
“I’m very honored to accept this position and appreciate the support and guidance that Bobby Stewart has given me over the past seven years in my role as associate athletic director,” remarked Sunbury. “I feel very prepared for the job and realize that it will be a new and different challenge for me. We have a great group of coaches here and I’m looking forward to working with them to continue making Pfeiffer athletics successful.”
Sunbury graduated from Erskine College with a B.S. in Physical Education and was inducted into their Sports Hall of Fame in 1988. She later obtained her Masters from the University of Georgia.
Thompson adds the titles Director of Compliance and Senior Woman Administrator to her current Assistant Athletic Director role taking over for Sunbury. Thompson started assisting Sunbury in compliance four years ago developing and managing of all aspects of a complete compliance program for NCAA II, Conference Carolinas and Pfeiffer.
Thompson’s new capacity will continue the development and management of compliance while overseeing the NCAA compliance program which ensures adherence to NCAA and Conference Carolinas rules and regulations. Her new SWA duties will include representing Pfeiffer at NCAA and conference meetings while advocating for student-athletes and coaches. As assistant athletic director, Thompson will continue oversight of financial operations for athletics in conjunction with the athletic director.
Finally, Smith will add on the title Assistant Athletic Director for Operations while retaining his head coaching duties with men’s soccer. Smith’s additional responsibilities will now include game management, facility scheduling and transportation manager for all Pfeiffer team travel.
