COX DRAINS 27; HARVEY POSTS DOUBLE-DOUBLE WITH 19 BOARDS AS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL BEATS CONVERSE 67-61

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University used 27 points from Brittany Cox (Winston-Salem, NC) and a double-double from Christina Harvey that included 19 rebounds in a 67-61 victory in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action on Saturday night. The Lady Falcons dominated the boards 57-36 improving to 7-10 overall, 6-5 in league play. The visiting Valkyries suffer their fifth-straight loss dipping to 3-15, 3-8.

Pfeiffer jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead at the 13:35 mark of the first after a three point basket by freshman Sam Craven (Asheboro, NC). From there, Converse grabbed the lead with a 14-2 run over the next five minutes to take a 17-13 lead after a jumper from Jasmine Middlebrookes (Atlanta, GA).

The Lady Falcons got the lead back two minutes later on a Cox jumper, before a Middlebrookes triple gave the lead right back to the Valkyries with 4:21 to go in the half. After a pair of Harvey free throws put the hosts back up one with 1:57 left, a Tasia Holdorf (Atlanta, GA) layup and free throw by Middlebrookes gave Converse a 29-27 lead at the break.

Coming up on the halfway point of the second half in a tie game, Craven would knock down another long range three to put the Lady Falcons ahead for good with 12:37 to go. A Katy Vaughn (Lebanon, TN) layup brought the Valkyries within one, 41-40, with 10:45 to play, but five-straight Cox points pushed the lead back to a half-dozen at 46-40.

A free throw from Middlebrookes and triple from Holdorf again got the visitors within one at the 7:31 and 5:57 marks of the second, but another pair of Cox and Harvey free throws boosted the lead back to five with just under four minutes remaining. Pfeiffer held its lead from there hitting eight free throws in the final 60 seconds.

Behind Cox’s 27, Harvey chipped in with 18 points and 19 rebounds while Craven also had a dozen. Middlebrookes led the Valkyries with 21 off the bench while Holdorf popped in 13. Neither team shot very well from the floor as Converse held the 36-30 advantage in field goal percentage, but the Lady Falcons outscored the Valkyries 24-9 from the free throw line in addition to the +21 rebound margin.

Pfeiffer, winners of two-straight, will host Lees-McRae in another Conference Carolinas matchup on Wednesday. The Lady Falcons and Lady Bobcats will tip at 5:30 p.m.
