WILSON, N.C. - Pfeiffer University made 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute around two Barton turnovers to hand the Lady Bulldogs their first Conference Carolinas loss of the season, 78-72, on Thursday night in Wilson Gymnasium. The combination of sophomore forward Christina Harvey (Locust Grove, Va.) and sophomore guard Brittany Cox (Winston-Salem, N.C.) accounted for 49 points on 16-of-24 shooting and the Falcons outscored Barton 26-11 from the foul line in raising their record to 11-12 overall and 10-7 in the league.

Barton’s streaks of 34 straight conference wins and 14 consecutive wins overall this season were halted. Barton, ranked sixth in the Southeast Region, stands 20-3 overall and 16-1 in the league. BC had won 37 consecutive regular season home games in the ‘Dog House’ dating back to a loss on Dec. 1, 2007. The Lady Bulldogs entertain Belmont Abbey at 5:30 on Saturday evening. Harvey notched game-highs of 25 points and 16 rebounds and hit 9-of-12 shots from the floor. She also had three assists and two steals. Cox canned 24 points on 7-of-12 shooting, was 7-of-7 from the foul line and had three blocks.

Sophomore guard Celeste Caudill (Sparta, N.C.) added 10 points and sophomore guard Kellie Rhoney (Catawba, N.C.) contributed five points and seven assists. Barton got 13 points from junior guard Jannetta Robinson (Willard, N.C.), 12 points and eight rebounds from sophomore forward Shante Neal ((Spring Hope, N.C.) and 10 points, seven assists from freshman guard Nyeshea Willie (Virginia Beach, Va.)

Pfeiffer swished 52.2 percent of its shots (23-of-42) and was 26-of-33 (78.8 percent) from the foul line. The Falcons also claimed a 35-33 rebounding edge. After Pfeiffer bolted to the 9-0 lead behind the play of Cox, Barton rebounded with an 18-9 run to make it 18-18 on a layup by sophomore forward Jolanda Mitchell (Raleigh, N.C.). Late in the first half, Shawnta Shelton (Pleasant Garden, N.C.) and Robinson swished 3-point bombs, but Caudill cashed in two of her own to pull Pfeiffer within 31-30. Six of the final eight baskets of the half were 3-pointers.

Sophomore center Janae Jackson (Fort Belvoir, Va.) powered up down low for Barton’s first eight points of the second half and Willie swished a 3-pointer for a 51-40 cushion at the 15:09 mark. Cox and Harvey then took control for the Falcons as they roared back to tie the score at 56-56 at 9:47.

Neither team led by more than two points from that point forward until the final minute. With Pfeiffer nursing a 73-72 lead, Harvey hit two foul shots with one minute left. Barton turned the ball over on its next two possessions and junior guard Shelly Reese (Browns Summit, N.C.) made 3-of-4 foul shots for the final margin.
