SOFTBALL SWEPT BY NEWBERRY 7-0, 5-1; PATTERSON HOMERS IN GAME TWO

MISENHEIMER, N.C. Behind a pair of complete games from Felicia Taylor (Venice, FL) and a grand slam in game two by Chelsie Hilbourne (Loris, SC), Newberry College scored a non-conference softball sweep by the scores of 7-0 and 5-1 over Pfeiffer University on Tuesday afternoon. Taylor threw 224 pitches combined as the Wolves improve to 11-12 on the year while the Lady Falcons fall to 11-11.

Taylor fired a shutout in game one for Newberry scattering four hits with six strikeouts. The Wolves struck early with a two-out, two-run single from Casey Stevens (Coral Springs, FL) in the first and a two-out infield single to short in the second off the bat of Codi Kelly (New River, AZ).

Tallies in each of the final three frames of the opener gave Newberry its 7-0 win. Jennifer Yancey (Dunwoody, GA) came through with a RBI-single in the fifth that scored Taylor while a Lady Falcon error and RBI-double by Hilbourne helped plate two more in the sixth. Newberry closed game one scoring out after a RBI-triple from Richelle Mirabal (Tampa, FL) in the seventh.

In the nightcap, it was Pfeiffer that struck first for their lone run of the afternoon as Kirsten Patterson (Anthem, AZ) belted a leadoff homer on the first pitch in the second to make it 1-0 Lady Falcons. In a five-run fifth, Hilbourne capped the frame with her laser of the wall in left for the grand slam and a 5-1 Wolves win.

Taylor needed 127 pitches in game two to register the complete game allowing the one run on four hits. Melanie Conklin (Wellington, OH) suffered the loss striking out 12.

Pfeiffer returns to the diamond on Wednesday afternoon looking to stay unbeaten in Conference Carolinas play hosting Coker at 1:00 p.m.
