MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University and Lander University split a non-conference softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon as both teams picked up shutout victories at Jack Ingram Field. The Bearcats scored a 2-0 win in the opener while the Lady Falcons bounced back with a 3-0 win in game two. Lander improves to 14-11 on the year while Pfeiffer advances to 13-13.
In the opener, Lander struck early in the first as an infield single to third from Brittney Sheriff (Belton, SC) and eventually stolen base of second, would prove beneficial as Sheriff would score on Taylor Donson’s (Sarasota, FL) one-out double to center. The Bearcats added their insurance run in the fourth as a Casey Corbitt (West Columbia, SC) single to center scored Rachelle Adkins (Newman, GA) who started with an infield single to second.
Lander starter Hayley Leissner (Jefferson, GA) notched the game one shutout scattering just three hits with eight strikeouts in the win. Pfeiffer’s Allison Braswell (Asheboro, NC) broke up the no-hit bid with one out in the bottom of the fifth.
In game two, it was Melanie Conklin’s (Wellington, OH) turn to return the shutout as she blanked the Bearcats on four hits with a strikeout. Pfeiffer struck first in the nightcap as a Hannah Jackson (Greensboro, NC) single to center plated Conklin with an unearned run in the third. Conklin kept the inning alive by reaching on a two-out error at short.
Still trailing by one in the top of the sixth, Lander quickly loaded the bases with one out for Jamie Presnell (Campobello, SC). As Presnell dropped a bunt down the first base line, the home plate umpire determined that the bat had rolled into the ball making contact for a second time in fair territory, thus ruling a dead ball and Presnell out on the play. Conklin then got a fly ball to left off the bat of Blair Hammonds (Abbeville, SC) to retire the side.
Pfeiffer would add two big insurance runs in their half of the sixth as Kirsten Patterson (Anthem, AZ) lifted a foul sacrifice-fly to left while Braswell deposited a run-scoring double down the left-field line.
The Lady Falcons will host their second-straight Peach Belt Conference school on Friday as USC-Aiken comes to town for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
