MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University allowed five unearned runs on five defensive miscues on the day handing Belmont Abbey College a pair of Conference Carolinas softball victories on Monday afternoon. The Crusaders scored 2-1 and 3-2 victories improving to 9-15 overall, 4-4 in league play. The Lady Falcons dip to 13-17, 7-3.
In the opener, a scoreless ballgame ended in the top of the sixth as a dropped foul ball allowed Becca Rothrock’s (Winston-Salem, NC) two-out at-bat continue. On the next pitch, Rothrock would line a solo home run to straight-away center for a 1-0 Crusaders advantage.
A half-inning later, Pfeiffer responded as a leadoff single by Kirsten Patterson (Anthem, AZ) paid off on Amber Johnson’s (Spokane, WA) two-out single to center. The difference maker came in the seventh as a Kelsey Spangler (Mooresville, NC) sacrifice-fly scored pinch-runner Jasmine Berryman (Mooresville, NC). A Lady Falcon throwing error put Berryman at third with one out, instead of two, setting up the sac-fly.
Sami Michaelis (Woodville, OH) notched the win in the circle throwing all seven frames allowing one run on four hits. Pfeiffer’s Melanie Conklin (Wellington, OH) suffered the tough-luck loss scattering five hits with four strikeouts amongst the two unearned runs.
In the nightcap, both teams traded unearned runs in the second until the Crusaders pushed across the decisive third run again in the top of the seventh. A bases-loaded error on a throw to the plate allowed Belmont Abbey’s Kathleen Pasquarella (Statesville, NC) and Alysia Stewart (Marshville, NC) score the visitors first runs.
In the Lady Falcon second, a Crusader throwing error led to their two unearned runs as Celia Dew (Sanford, NC) first scored on a wild pitch while Johnson later picked up a RBI with a groundout to short that plated Allison Braswell (Asheboro, NC).
The seventh frame started with Kelly Schweizer (Gambrills, MD) reaching on a fielding error later scoring in the frame on a mishandled base hit to center for the game’s final run. In the Pfeiffer seventh, the Lady Falcons had runners and first and second with one down, but Michaelis shut down the final two hitters to earn the save. Emily Self (Cherryville, NC) earned the win throwing the first six innings allowing the two unearned runs on seven hits.
Pfeiffer returns to the diamond on Friday hosting West Virginia State at 2:00 p.m.
