MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Belmont Abbey College, ranked #20 in the latest Collegiate Baseball poll, used a three-run blast from Chris Vazquez (Miami, FL) in a four-run fourth to score a 5-3 non-conference win over Pfeiffer University in baseball action Tuesday afternoon. Overall, the Crusaders move to 24-7 on the year while the Falcons fall to 13-19.
RBI-groundouts provided the first runs of the day in the Belmont Abbey second and Pfeiffer third. Tim Dye (Clermont, FL) brought home the visitors run in the second on a groundball to short while Jacob Yates (Blairs, VA) evened things for the Falcons with his groundball to second in the third.
In the decisive four-run fourth for Belmont Abbey, a leadoff walk and base hit by Joey Frabasile (Hartsdale, NY) set the table for Vazquez to deliver his liner to left for a 4-1 lead. John Cucchiarella (Kantoah, NY) later capped off the frame with a run-scoring infield single to second.
Pfeiffer tried to make things close late with runs in the eighth and ninth, but Crusader closer Jordan Cudney (Charlotte, NC) would get three strikeouts in the ninth to preserve the win. Jesse Dunn (Easley, SC) made it 5-2 with a RBI-double to left in the eighth while Eric Shoemaker (Huntersville, NC) also picked up a run-scoring two-bagger in the ninth.
Cudney picked up his eighth save of the season for reliever Matt Parish (Morristown, NJ) tossing the final 1.2 innings with his three strikeouts. Parish tossed the middle three frames on Tuesday going nine-up, nine-down during his tenure.
Frabasile, Vazquez and Caleb Shore (Kannapolis, NC) each had two hits for the Crusaders while Dunn had the only multi-hit game for Pfeiffer.
The same two teams will meet again this weekend at Pfeiffer’s Joe Ferebee Field for their three-game Conference Carolinas series. Saturday’s twinbill begins at noon while Sunday’s series-finale kicks off at 1:00 p.m.
