MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Mount Olive College used a .405 attack percentage to go along with their 23 digs and seven total team blocks to blank Pfeiffer University 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-17) in Conference Carolinas men’s volleyball action on Thursday night. The win pushes the Trojans to 18-6 overall, 6-0 in league play, while the Falcons fall to 8-11, 0-5.
The Falcons jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead in the opening set after one of Eric Edelman’s (Henrietta, NY) team-high 10 kills on the night. A service ace by the Trojans Adam Miracle (Cincinnati, OH) brought the visitors to within two before they eventually took the lead at 18-17 on a kill from freshman Angel Dache (La Habana, CUBA). A pair of aces by Miracle would help the Trojans run away late in set one while back-to-back kills from Tim Ebbecke (Commack, NY) and Benedikt Schirmers (Rottenburg, GERMANY) gave Mount Olive a 1-0 set lead.
Both teams went back and forth early in set two as a kill from Drew Burdette (Greer, SC) put the Falcons up 7-5. After another Ebbecke kill knotted the contest at eight, Mount Olive would score the next three off of Falcon errors to force a Pfeiffer timeout with an 11-8 Trojan lead. A put down by Lance Johnson (Harrisburg, PA) brought the hosts back to within one at 11-10 but another four-point spurt put the Trojans up for good. John Nunns (Fayetteville, NC) led the first attack with a pair of kills while Schirmers and Ebbecke fueled the final points of set two each adding another kill.
At 4-4 of set three, Mount Olive would again tally four-straight points to take an 8-4 lead. Nunns started with another one of his eight kills on the night coupling with a pair of Falcon errors and ace from Schirmers putting the visitors up four. Mount Olive would maintain their lead from there as Alex Vazquez (Miami, FL) and Nunns finished off the Falcons with two of the match’s final three points.
Jackson Mettechecchi (Littlerock, CA) helped the Trojans with a match-high 40 assists on the night. Dache was the only Mount Olive player to finish in double-digit kills while Schirmers also led with nine digs. For Pfeiffer, Edelman concluded with 10 kills while Evan Fullerton (Ambridge, PA) put up 22 assists. Mark Hess (Lebanon, PA) anchored the defense with six digs while Johnson had a pair of block assists.
