MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Matt Wade (Chapel Hill, NC) closed out the home portion of the 2011 baseball schedule with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth as Pfeiffer University rallied to finish off the sweep of St. Andrews on Sunday afternoon. After the Knights took a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth, Wade completed the two-run bottom half as the Falcons improve to 16-24 overall, 9-9 in league play. The Knights fall to 8-28, 2-16. Pfeiffer needs just one win next weekend at Coker to clinch a tournament playoff spot.
Jake Anderson (Boulder, CO) gave St. Andrews a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth with his two-out single to right. Jason Murray (Syracuse, NY) tallied the run as he started the frame with a leadoff walk. In the Pfeiffer ninth, Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC) started with an infield single to short, later scoring the tying run on a throwing error from shortstop as Aarin Sharpe (Winterville, NC) reached via single on the same play.
With Sharpe at second, Wade delivered his hit to right as Sharpe just narrowly avoided the tag of catcher R.J. Blasi (Swansboro, NC). Anderson’s throw from right was just a hair up the 3rd base line that allowed Sharpe to score.
Earlier in the day, Eric Shoemaker (Huntersville, NC) started the scoring with a solo-HR to right leading off the second. The Knights responded with a RBI-single to left by Sebastian Ray (Plant City, FL) in the top of the third.
After SAPC took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a Murray single to left, Pfeiffer tied it with a RBI-single to center by Sharpe. Shoemaker took off from second on the pitch and easily scored on the hit-and-run. Shoemaker, Sharpe and Wade each had two hits for the Falcons while Anderson led the Knight by going 3-for-4.
Pfeiffer will take a mid-week trip to Tennessee taking on Tusculum and Carson-Newman before heading to Coker next weekend for the final Conference series of the year.
