GAFFNEY, S.C. – Pfeiffer University second-half slump continued on Monday as Limestone College claimed a 5-0 and 4-1 sweep in Conference Carolinas softball action at Saints Field. Limestone improves to 16-26-1 overall, 7-3 in league play while the Lady Falcons drop to 14-26, 8-10 ending their conference slate for 2011. Pfeiffer currently stands eighth in the conference with the top eight teams moving on to the year-end tournament.
On senior day, Limestone hurlers had a perfect game going until Celia Dew (Sanford, NC) broke it up with a two-out, fourth inning single to left. Pfeiffer tried to rally late with a pair of hits in the sixth and seventh frames, but couldn’t muster a run. Rachel LaBar (Bradenton, FL) had the only extra-base hit for the visitors with a two-out double in the seventh.
Limestone used a pair of runs in the first and third frames, finishing off with another tally in the sixth. The Saints out-hit the Lady Falcons 10-5 in the opener.
Things didn’t fare much better for Pfeiffer in game two as Melanie Conklin (Wellington, OH) picked up the only hit of the game breaking up the no-hit bid with a lead-off sixth inning single. Conklin scored the lone run in that sixth frame moving to second on a sac-bunt by Dew, third on a wild pitch and scoring on a Sarah Waylock (Cary, IL) sac-fly to left.
Dropping 13 of their last 14 contests, Pfeiffer will look to turn things around on Thursday hosting soon-to-be conference foe King at 2:00 p.m. The Tornados will join the league as a full fledge member for the 2011-2012 season.
