BASEBALL SUFFERS FIRST LOSS OF CC TOURNAMENT; LIMESTONE SQUEEKS BY 5-3

WILSON, N.C. – Second-ranked Limestone College posted a pair of runs in the top of the seventh that proved to be the difference as the Saints took a 5-3 win over Pfeiffer University during second day play at the 2011 Conference Carolinas baseball tournament. Limestone (30-14) advances to face Mount Olive in the winner’s bracket game at 11:00 a.m. while Pfeiffer (21-27) faces host and sixth-seed Barton at 3:00 p.m. in an elimination game. Weather is a big concern with Saturday contests with rain expected in the afternoon.

Pfeiffer got on the board first with a two-out double by Jesse Dunn in the third. Dunn shot a rocket down the left field line that scored Mike Green who reached with a one-out walk. After the Saints scored five unanswered, the Falcons tried to put together a comeback over the final two frames.

In the eighth, Jacob Yates would score on a wild pitch with the Falcons unable to push across anymore with runners at second and third with nobody out. In the ninth, Jon Gray began the inning with a double to left quickly coming around on a David Barham single to right. A pair of strikeouts and fly out would save the win for Limestone.
