RESULTS VS. MARS HILL COLLEGE (2008-02-23 00:00:00)

The Falcons fall short to a determined Mars Hill squad.

February 23, 2008: The Pfeiffer Falcons (0-1) opened their season at home against the Lions of Mars Hill College (3-0).

Mars Hill tallied the first goal of the game with 5:34 remaining in the first quarter, and maintained their lead throughout the contest despite a number of comeback attempts from the Falcons. After giving up the first three goals of the game, Pfeiffer answered, finishing the quarter with two of their own. Time expired, and Pfeiffer trailed by one goal, 3-2.

Mars Hill wasted no time in the second stanza, scoring their next goal of the ensuing face-off. They continued to reel off two more goals building a 6-2 with 9:00 remaining in the half. However, Pfeiffer refused to go away, outscoring the Lions 4-1 in the final 9 minutes of the half bringing the score to 7-6.

Coming out of halftime, Mars Hill’s Jeff Cizdziel needed less than 30 seconds to spark another three goal scoring run. The gritty Falcons answered with another a three goal run, finishing the period trailing 11-9.

Unfortunately, for Pfeiffer the fourth quarter was "déjà vu all over again," as Mars Hill tallied four straight goals coming out of the break only to see Pfeiffer answer with a three goal run of their own. The Falcons simply ran out of time, and when the clock finally registered 00:00 Mars Hill had sealed a 15-12 victory.

Pfeiffer outshot the Lions 52 to 33, but accuracy seemed to escape the young Falcons as only 22 were on goal, while 27 of the Lions shots were on cage. Nick Sigona recorded 12 saves for the Lions, and Pat Martin was steady between the pipes stopping 13 shots. The Lions were brilliant at the face-off X, and won the groundball battle, which proved to be the difference in the game. The Falcons return to action Saturday March 1st at home against local rival Catawba College.
