MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Fahret Salihovic (Charlotte, NC) led the way again for Pfeiffer University registering the match’s only tally during a 1-0 clean sheet over visiting North Greenville in Conference Carolinas men’s soccer action on Tuesday afternoon. The win pushes the Falcons to 3-12-1 overall, 2-7-1 in league play, while the Crusaders drop to 8-7, 6-5.
The lone strike by Salihovic came just 7:23 in as Kris Jaggers (Burlington, NC) assisted on the play. From the right side, Jaggers sent a quick touch pass ahead to Salihovic who blasted his shot inside the right post as keeper Justin Braddock (Columbia, SC) had little chance moving to his left.
Pfeiffer would get several more quality chances as Niko Andrade (Gainesville, GA) would hit the crossbar in the 13th minute before North Greenville’s Chandler Patterson (Charlotte, NC) would do the same just after the break in the 48th minute. The best opportunity for insurance came in the 51st minute as Salihovic was taken down inside the box setting up a penalty kick. Salihovic’s attempt clanked off the crossbar and back into play keeping the match at 1-0.
Freshman keeper Zach Liles (Cumming, GA) turned away seven Crusader shots on the day, two in the second half, to earn his first shutout of the season. Luis Mattei (Guapore, BRAZIL) led North Greenville with three shots on the day, two being knocked away by Liles. The physical contest saw 40 fouls in the 90 minutes with Pfeiffer being whistled for 21 of them.
The Falcons will return to the N.E. Lefko pitch for one final match in 2011 on Saturday hosting Queens at 3:00 p.m. Five seniors will be honored pregame before the initial kickoff. Live stats will also being available through http://www.gofalconsports.com.
