MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Led by Brittany Cox’s (Winston-Salem, NC) game-high 31 points, Pfeiffer University took care of Anderson University 74-65 in non-conference women’s basketball action on Tuesday night. The Lady Falcons drained nine long distance shots improving to 1-2 on the season while the Trojans remain winless at 0-2.
Pfeiffer had the lead from the moment Christina Harvey (Locust Grove, VA) drained the game’s first shot until the final buzzer. Up by four, 13-9, at the halfway point of the first half, the Lady Falcons sprinted out on an 18-2 run over the next six minutes to grab a commanding 33-11 lead with 3:19 left. With a pair of triples and pair of free throws, Cox registered eight of those points while Vontreece Hayes (Greensboro, NC) also contributed with back-to-back baskets.
Down 23 with 2:14 left in the half, Anderson made a quick 9-0 run to slim the deficit down to 14, 36-22 at the intermission. The entire stretch was thanks to Alissa Diaz (Coral Springs, FL) who connected on a jumper, three-ball and four free throws to end the first 20 minutes.
Early into the second half, Pfeiffer would see their largest lead get to 17 on three occasions with Cox and Harvey leading the way, but Anderson would again sneak back into the contest slicing the margin down to nine with 6:47 to go on a basket by Breonda Shannon (Columbia, SC). Cox responded with another three to put the Lady Falcons back up a dozen before Rhoney dropped a three in between two more from Cox to help ice the contest with three minutes left.
Behind Cox’s 31, Harvey poured in 14 points while Rhoney contributed with 13. Pfeiffer shot 43% from the floor, including 35% from long distance. Each team pulled down 38 boards while Anderson had just two more turnovers than the Lady Falcons with 12. Anderson was led by Diaz’s 17 while Shannon posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Pfeiffer returns to the hardwood on Friday and Saturday participating in the Queen City Classic hosted by Johnson C. Smith down in Charlotte. The Lady Falcons take on the host Bulls at 6:00 p.m. Friday while battling Livingstone at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
