SALISBURY, N.C. - Using a game-high 19 points from Danny Smith and a double-double posted by KC Anuna, Pfeiffer University picked up a 72-62 victory over region foe Livingstone in the final non-conference tune-up on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons improve to 6-4 on the year with Tuesday's Conference Carolinas opener ahead while the Blue Bears fall to 3-3.
Pfeiffer closed out the low-scoring first half on a 24-14 run after Livingstone had taken a brief three-point lead. Smith's triple tied the contest with 12:57 to play in the half while later giving the Falcons the lead for good just two minutes later.
Midway through the second, Pfeiffer grabbed its largest lead of the day at 15 with 7:47 and 5:27 remaining in the contest after holding a double-digit lead for most of the final 20 minutes. The Blue Bears would cut it down to five late but ran out of time as the Falcons connected on nine of their final 12 free throws in the final 86 seconds.
Smith shot over 50% dropping his 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor while adding five assists. Anuna contributed with 14 points and 11 boards while Desmond Thomas finished the day with a dozen. Nasir Austin paced Livingstone with 14 points while Josh Hodge had 11. Tyler Johnson pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds.
Pfeiffer now enters Conference Carolinas play in 2012 traveling to St. Andrews on Tuesday for the league opener. The Falcons' home-opener in league play will come Thursday hosting Mount Olive at 7:30 p.m.
