LYON GOES DEEP TWICE AS BASEBALL DOUBLES UP BREVARD 6-3

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Powered by four home runs, two of which from Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC), Pfeiffer University scored a 6-3 victory over Brevard College in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon. The Falcons move to 2-3 overall with the win while the Tornados drop to 0-2.

Pfeiffer bounced out to a 2-0 lead in the second on a sacrifice fly by Cole McGraw (Claremont, NC) and a solo homer by Lyon. An inning later, Jon Gray (Granite Falls, NC) belted a two-run shot down the left-field line while Justin Harris (Albany, NY) went back-to-back with Gray to make it 5-0.

Insurance in the form of Lyon’s second of the day in the top of the sixth before Brevard made things interesting with three in the seventh. After Kramer Clark (Candler, NC) led off with a single and stole second, Zack Merriken (Hudson, NC) drove him in with a single to left-center getting the Tornados on the board. Later in the frame, Chris Christopoulos (Raleigh, NC) plated two with his double to deep right.

Brevard just nearly missed out on making it a two-run game in the eighth when Tarron Robinson (Chapel Hill, NC) blasted a shot deep into the gap of right-center. Falcon centerfielder Kevin Price (Asheville, NC) found the fence and timed his leap right to rob Robinson of a potential round-tripper.

The Tornados were limited at the plate early on as Falcon starter Bryan Tuttle (Lenoir, NC) didn’t allow a hit until Merriken’s two-out single in the fifth. Tuttle picked up the win tossing seven frames allowing the three runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Craig Bolton (Shelby, NC) and Tyler Summers (Mechanicsville, MD) pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings to preserve Tuttle’s win.

Pfeiffer will get back to action this weekend hosting a four-team round-robin style tournament in Asheboro at McCrary Park. The Falcons will be joined by Tusculum, Barton and Shepherd in the weekend festivities with two games a day starting Friday afternoon. The Falcons will play in the opener at 3:00 p.m. against Shepherd followed by Tusculum/Barton at 6:30 p.m.
