ASHEBORO, N.C. – Catapulted by a two-out, five-run barrage in the top of the fifth and grand slam in the sixth, Tusculum College was able to remain perfect on the young season cruising to a 15-6 victory over Pfeiffer University in day two of the 2012 Copperheads Baseball Tournament at McCrary Park. The Pioneers advance to 6-0 on the year while the Falcons drop to 3-4.
Tusculum struck first in the second as an Aaron Guinn (Norris, TN) single, Nate Reid (Bourbonnais, IL) double and groundout to third by Tripper Crisson (Lincolnton, NC) put the visitors up 1-0. Reid would soon plate on the next groundball to short by Lukas Graves (St. Joseph, IL) to put the Pioneers up two.
Pfeiffer quickly got one of those runs back in the home half of the second as Aarin Sharpe (Winterville, NC) scored Johnny Brown, Jr. (Greensboro, NC) with his groundout to short. Brown reached on an infield single to short and scampered to third on Preston Lyon’s (Gastonia, NC) single to right-center.
Sharpe tied it for the Falcons in the fourth on a two-out RBI-single to right-center that scored Jon Gray (Granite Falls, NC). Kevin Price would put the hosts up one at 3-2 with a single to right, knocked down by the gusty breeze, to score Justin Harris (Albany, NY). Harris would reach on the first error of the day committed by either side to help set up the pair of runs.
Tusculum would bounce back just a half inning later scoring five to take a 7-3 lead. Guinn would keep the inning alive with a single to left before Reid did his part by drawing a walk before Crisson drove both in with his two-bagger to right-center. Graves would follow by singling home Crisson while Alexi Colon (Vineland, NJ) would bring in Graves. Cade Stallings (Knoxville, TN) would end the scoring frame by driving home Colon with his base knock to right.
Graves would continue his stellar afternoon with a grand slam in the top of the sixth with a liner over the wall in right-center. The final run of the day for the Falcons would come on a RBI groundout by Harris in the seventh. Tusculum would add three more in the ninth to cap their big afternoon while the Falcons added two in the bottom.
Pfeiffer will wrap up its tournament weekend on Sunday afternoon taking on league foe Barton in a non-conference tilt at 3:30 p.m.
