DUE WEST, S.C. - Erskine College's Porsha Morgan tallied 31 points while leading a 27-9 run to close out the first half as the Flying Fleet claimed a 73-67 victory over Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action on Saturday night. The Fleet improve to 11-12 overall, 8-7 in league play while the Lady Falcons, who saw Brittany Cox score her 1,000th career point, drop to 11-11, 6-7.
A Morgan jumper put Erskine up 13-12 with 11:38 remaining to play in the first that would end up sparking the big run. Lindsey Weidenaar and Rosa Powell got in on the action with three-pointers while free throws from Cox and a jumper by Haley Grimsley temporarily stopped the bleeding for Pfeiffer. Another basket by Morgan put the Fleet up 41-21 with 44 seconds left that carried into the half.
The second half became quite the opposite as after a pair of Morgan free throws, a bucket by Vontenea Williams would start the Lady Falcons' comeback attempt. Pfeiffer would chip away all half long as a Cox triple would get the visitors within 10 at 63-53 while a Kellie Rhoney triple and subsequent Cox three again, the Lady Falcons found themselves down just four, 63-59, with 4:32 showing on the clock.
With 2:18 remaining, Rhoney had erased the 20+ point deficit tying the contest at 67-67 on a jumper in the paint. Having to hold off Pfeiffer, Morgan converted two more points and pair of free throws in the final seconds to allow Erskine to hold on for the six-point win.
The Fleet shot 47% in the victory shooting 51% in the first half to just 39% in the second. Pfeiffer shot 38% overall bouncing back from 26% in the first 20 minutes to 49% in the second.
Morgan's 31 was one of three scorers in double-figures for the Fleet behind Elizabeth Tatum's 17 and Tara Potter's 11. Cox, who scored her 1,000th point in the contest, led the Lady Falcons with a 31-point, 12-rebound double-double to lead the Lady Falcons. Williams scored 14 going a perfect 7-for-7 from the field while Rhoney added 13.
Pfeiffer returns to action on Tuesday night hosting Queens inside the Merner Gym. The rivalry contest will tip at 5:30 p.m. with live stats and live video being available at http://www.gofalconsports.com.
