DUE WEST, S.C. - Despite a game-high 31 points from Danny Smith, Erskine College knocked down crucial free throws during crunch time to claim a 79-74 win over Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas men's basketball action on Saturday in Belk Arena. The Fleet move to 8-16 overal, 4-9 in league play while the Falcons even to 11-11, 5-7.
Down by as much as 19 midway through the second, Pfeiffer cut the lead down to just one with 1:11 remaining as a three-pointer by Danny Smith gave Erskine a slim 73-72 lead. The Fleet would go on to convert six of their final eight free throws to hold on for the win. Pfeiffer missed three triple attempts in the final 38 seconds trying to come up with the equalizer. Erskine had the lead from the intial tip to the final buzzer.
Corey Sorrell paced the Fleet as one of four scorers in double-figures with 18 points. Smith tallied his game-high 31 while Reggie Hollinger contributed with 16. Erskine shot 52% in the win while the Falcons needed a 58% shooting second half to finish at 48% for the night.
