MISENHEIMER, N.C. – In honor of their late assistant coach Ray Harrington, recognized in a pregame ceremony, the Pfeiffer University softball team rallied late to earn a Conference Carolinas split in softball action against Erskine College on Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Falcons fell in extra innings, 5-1 in the opener before bouncing back with a 7-4 triumph in game two. Pfeiffer now stands at 13-18 overall, 4-4 in league play while the Fleet move to 11-15, 9-5.
In game one, each team traded runs in the fourth as Larissa Shannon (Newberry, SC) belted a solo shot for Erskine while Melanie Conklin (Wellington, OH) doubled home Ashlee Ellen (Jacksonville, FL) in the home half. In the top of the eighth, the Fleet would score four, all with two-outs, as two Lady Falcon errors aided Erskine in scoring their four runs. Pfeiffer would have a chance in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn’t cash in after a one-out double from Kirsten Patterson (Anthem, AZ).
Game two began with both teams traded runs again, this time in the first frame as Erskine used a Morgan Purcell (Duncan, SC) run-scoring single to left while Conklin doubled again to score Hannah Jackson (Greensboro, NC).
Pfeiffer blew things open with a six-run fifth as Patterson collected a two-run single scoring Conklin and Jackson before Andrea Wagner plated Sadie Saine (Crouse, NC) and Patterson with her double off the wall in left. Celia Dew (Sanford, NC) would immediately follow with a double of her own to score Emily Workman (Vale, NC) and Wagner. Shannon would add another blast, this of the two-run variety, to finish off scoring for Erskine.
Jackson, Conklin and Patterson would each rack up a pair of hits in the victory while Shelby Brown (South Hill, VA) notched the complete game win in the circle.
Pfeiffer returns to action on Thursday briefly stepping out of conference play to host West Virginia State beginning at 3:00 p.m. Live stats will be available through http://www.gofalconsports.com.
