MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Using a six-run sixth inning that included a grand slam, Wingate University cruised to a 9-3 victory over Pfeiffer University in non-conference baseball action Wednesday at Joe Ferebee Field. The two teams split the season series winning on each other’s home turf as the Bulldogs improve to 26-16 overall while the Falcons fall to 19-17.
Scoring opened in the third as James Tedder (Clemmons, NC) put the first hit and run up on the board for the Bulldogs with an opposite field solo shot to left. Wingate’s six-run sixth began with three-straight singles from Brian Yeung (Raleigh, NC), Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, NC) and Jason Hunter (West Chester, PA). Hunter showed bunt in his at-bat, but pulled back just in time to slap a single up the middle to score Yeung from second.
After an intentional walk was given to Tedder to load the bases, Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, GA) would get hit on an inside pitch to bring home Allison for the easy RBI. After a strike out by starter Eric Shuford (Shelby, NC) to the Bulldogs’ Thomas Spitz (West Chester, PA) putting two outs on the board, Jacob Karr (Richmond, VA) blasted a grand slam that cleared the trees in left-center giving the visitors a 7-0 lead.
Karr struck again in the Wingate eighth with a RBI-single to left-center before the Falcons got on the board with a run of their own on a Kevin Price single to right. Aarin Sharpe (Winterville, NC) and Jacob Yates (Blairs, VA) started the frame with base hits to set the table for Price. Pinch-hitter Josh Clark (Clemmons, NC) wrapped up Bulldog scoring on the day with a run-scoring single down the left-field line in the ninth while Johnny Brown, Jr. (Greensboro, NC) added a two-run pinch-hit single in the Falcon ninth.
Karr led the Bulldogs with a pair of hits and five driven in on the day while Spitz, Allison, Hunter and Tedder also had two of Wingate’s 13 hits on the day. Pfeiffer out-hit the Bulldogs 14-13 thanks in part to Price’s 4-for-5 day at the dish. Stephen Vaughan (Wilmington, NC) earned the win on the mound tossing six scoreless innings allowing seven hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Pfeiffer will now get back into Conference Carolinas play this weekend heading north to King for a Friday/Saturday series with the Tornado. Both days will begin at 12:00 p.m. with Friday hosting a doubleheader.
