GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Pfeiffer University men's cross country team captured the award for top NCAA DII team at the Hagan Stone Classic on Saturday morning. The Falcons came in fourth overall in the 16-team field behind Howard Community College, the Duke Club team and only 7 points behind third place Guilford College. Senior Will Oliver was 5th overall and the top DII runner in the race finishing the wet course in a time of 27:09.
Alex Freeze finished next for the Pfeiffer men who ran a 29:21 and Henry Furman with a 29:38. Brandon Garren was fourth for in 29:52 with Nathan Jarman rounding out the top five just two seconds behind. Cody Bivens and Jesse Skidmore finished 6th and 7th for Pfeiffer in 30:37 and 30:54.
“The men ran a great race today," remarked head coach Scott Nolt. "The times weren’t as quick as we hoped with the course being as wet as it was in places, but still great races. We got a great team performance today, and probably the best race all season from our freshmen. Four of the top five and six of the top seven are freshmen runners for Pfeiffer."
The women's team finished fifth overall in the field and second to St. Augustine for the DII championship. Duke’s Club team won the meet ahead of the Wake Forest club, St. Augustine and NC A&T in fourth.
The women were led by freshmen Alex Crouch who ran a 20:52 good for 16th overall, but fourth among DII runners in a field full of Duke and Wake Forest runners. Trista Byers finished next for Pfeiffer in 21:38 followed by Cori Newton with a 21:51. Janna Featherstone finished in 22:35, still nursing an Achilles injury that kept her out of last weekend's race. Maia Black was Pfeiffer’s 5th runner finishing the course in 23:47.
“The women ran well," said Nolt. "With the injuries we have sustained this season our freshmen have stepped up to score positions 1-5 for us.”
Pfeiffer competes next at Frank Liske Park in Concord at the Conference Carolinas Championship October 19th.
