SALISBURY, N.C. - The Pfeiffer University baseball wrapped up its 2013 opening weekend with a pair of losses to nationally-ranked opponents on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons dropped an 8-1 decision to #13 Catawba before falling to #17 Tusculum 16-3. Pfeiffer stands at 0-3 on the year heading into Tuesday's home opener against Carson-Newman.
Pfeiffer's lone run of the opener against Catawba came in the top of the first as Jon Gray started a two-out rally with a double to left. Matt Wade followed by delivering his own double to center on the next pitch for a 1-0 Falcon lead. From there, Catawba would immediately respond with a three-run blast in the bottom of the frame while adding another big inning later with a four-run fifth. Gray, along with Kyle Hackney, would each collect two hits of Pfeiffer's five hits in the loss.
Against #17 Tusculum, Pfeiffer would again strike first in the top of the second as small ball contributed to the game's first run. Wade started with a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a Dalton Lindley walk, a Jacob Yates single to center would result in Lindley being thrown out at second while Wade advanced to third. Aarin Sharpe would then drop down a sacrifice bunt to plate Wade for Pfeiffer's first run.
After Tusculum delivered a six-spot in the bottom of the frame, the Falcons got back on the board in the sixth using a Gray single up the middle that brought home Johnny Brown, Jr. Again, the Pioneers responded in a big way adding another half-dozen runs in the bottom of the sixth. Brown, Jr. would cap Pfeiffer's scoring with a solo shot in the top of the eighth. Offense again struggled for Pfeiffer with just four hits in the nightcap. Tusculum would pound out 16 runs using 16 hits.
Pfeiffer will now look towards the 2013 home opener at Joe Ferebee Field on Tuesday afternoon hosting Carson-Newman at 2:00 p.m.
