MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Visiting Wingate University scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning of game one while posting a pair of four-run frame in game two to sweep Pfeiffer University 2-1 and 9-0 in non-conference softball on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs improve to 6-2 overall while the Lady Falcons drop to 3-5.
Tied 1-1 in the sixth of game one, Brittany Owens (Greenville, NC) started the rally with a one-out double to left-center. After a pop out to second, Shannen Adams (Ayden, NC) would lace a two-out double just inside the first base bag to give the Bulldogs their final 2-1 margin. Earlier, Owens put the visitors up 1-0 with a RBI-single up the middle while Pfeiffer’s Julianna Bullington (Ararat, NC) drove in Jaclyn Boever (Bostic, NC) with her single in the bottom of the inning. Stacey Houser (Mooresville, NC) got the win for the Bulldogs tossing all seven innings scattering three hits with six strikeouts.
Game two belonged from the Bulldogs at the start as Kelsey Maffucci (Rockledge, FL) sent an opposite-field laser down the right-field line to put Wingate up in the first. The first of two four-run frames came in the third as Taylor Laskey (Cherryville, NC) came up with a two-run double to cap the inning while a Laskey homer in the fifth, RBI-single from Kasey Pendley (Marion, NC) and pair of bases-loaded walks accounted for the final Bulldog runs. Starter Miranda Paul (Virginia Beach, VA) nearly had a five-inning no-hitter until pinch-hitter Deanna Crayton (Thomasville, NC) broke it up with a one-out single to left in the bottom of the fifth. Paul would allow just the one hit while strikeout out four in the win.
Pfeiffer returns home on Tuesday afternoon entertaining Catawba at 2:00 p.m.
