WILSON, N.C. - The Pfeiffer University pitching staff held host Barton College without a run over 16 innings en route to a 5-0 and 1-0 Conference Carolinas doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon at Nixon Field. The Falcons (15-24 Overall, 9-6 Conf.) arms only gave up seven total hits – all singles – to the Bulldogs (15-17, 6-10) and only allowed one Barton runner to reach second base on the day. The two teams will complete the three game league series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
GAME ONE: Pfeiffer 5, Barton 0
The opener started as a pitcher’s duel between Pfeiffer senior Tyler Ring and Barton senior Phillip Williams before the Falcons were to soar away with five late runs. Ring (2-5) went seven scoreless innings before senior closer Jeff Barkley closed out the shutout with two hitless innings of work.
Williams kept Pfeiffer off the scoreboard for the first four innings before a pair of doubles off the bats of junior Kyle Hackney and junior Kevin Price knocked in the first Falcon run in the fifth.
The visitors tacked on two more runs in the seventh to end Williams’ day on the mound. Hackney started the frame with his second double and scored on a single by sophomore Dalton Lindley, who later came around to score on a single by senior Jacob Yates. A couple of bases loaded walks drawn by sophomore Johnny, Brown, Jr., and Hackney concluded the Falcons offense in the ninth.
Hackney was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Yates and Lindley each added two singles as Pfeiffer outhit Barton 10-4.
Ring (2-5) had three strikeouts in his seven effective innings while Barkley picked up his fifth save of the season entering the game when the score was still 3-0.
Williams, senior Zac Crumper, junior Collins Cuthrell and sophomore Avery Harper had the Bulldogs four base knocks. Crumpler drew a walk and stole second base in the second inning to be the only Barton player to reach scoring position.
Williams (2-2) allowed three runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. The lefty had three strikeouts and did not issue a walk in the losing effort.
GAME TWO: Pfeiffer 1, Barton 0
The nightcap began just like the first game as a pitcher’s duel between two more senior starters. Brian Tuttle won the battle against Kyle Norville with a complete-game shutout that propelled Pfeiffer into third place in the league standings with the twin bill sweep.
Tuttle (3-7) – a two-time First Team All-Conference honoree – allowed just three singles and one walk over his seven scoreless innings and only faced two batters over the minimum with the aid of the Falcons defense turning three double plays behind him. The right-handed hurler just needed 73 innings to go the distance for a fifth this season with many early count outs.
Norville (3-4) matched Tuttle for the first five innings but Pfeiffer managed one run in the sixth to keep the southpaw from winning for a third consecutive start. Norville recorded four strikeouts in his first complete game of the year.
Junior Jon Gray started the decisive sixth innings with a leadoff single to the right field gap. Sophomore Cole McGraw successfully moved Gray to second with a sacrifice bunt before senior cleanup hitter Aarin Sharpe plated Gray with single to left.
Gray, Lindley and junior Matt Wade all had two hits for the visitors. Williams, Cuthrell and freshman Ben Youngblood accounted for the Bulldogs three singles.
