MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Mount Olive College swept a Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader from host Pfeiffer University on Sunday afternoon by the final scores of 8-0 (5) and 4-3 to wrap up the 2013 regular season at Jack Ingram Field. The Trojans improve to 28-12 overall, 14-6 in league play while the Lady Falcons fall to 20-26, 8-12. Pfeiffer will be the #8 seed in the upcoming weekend's conference tournament.
Mount Olive struck first in the second frame of game one as Tiffany Hawley blasted a laser over the left-center field fence to put the Trojans up 2-0. Mount Olive would add another run in the third taking advantage of back-to-back Lady Falcon errors pushing the lead to three before a RBI single from Erin Brogan made it a 4-0 contest. A bases-loaded walk to Danielle Mitchell would plate the third and final unearned run of the frame for the Trojans.
Two more came around in the Trojan fourth as a one-out single by Savannah Becker paid off with a Jennifer Jones two-run shot to straightaway center field. Kalie Smith would belt a solo shot to left-center leading off the fifth to help give the Trojans their early victory. Pfeiffer's pair of hits would come from Hannah Jackson and Sadie Saine to leadoff the fourth to break up a potential perfect game by Mount Olive starter Carly White.
The Trojans jumped on the board quickly in game two with three in the first taking advantage of two Pfeiffer errors. Katie Moore would pick up a RBI single while Becker recorded a RBI groundout. Mount Olive's other run came in on one of the two errors in the frame. Insurance started in the third as the Lady Falcons fourth miscue of the game resulted in a 4-0 lead for the Trojans.
Pfeiffer came up with seven hits in game two as Tyresha Ellis and Celia Dew had back-to-back base hits in the second while Ellis would be thrown out at third trying to take the extra base on Dew's single. Khristin Isley added another with a two-out single in the fifth while pinch-hitters Lexie Brock and Summer Pope, with a bloop single by Emily Workman, all did the same in the seventh. Brock would score the Lady Falcons first run while Isley's infield single plated Pope with the second. Workman would later score on a wild pitch to make things interesting at the end until Mount Olive held on for the 4-3 win.
Pfeiffer has now finished the 2013 regular season schedule and will advance into the annual Conference Carolinas softball tournament being held this coming Friday-Sunday in Burlington, North Carolina hosted by the City of Burlington. The Lady Falcons will be the eighth and final seed in the tourney taking on top-seeded King in the opening round Friday.
