MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Mount Olive College finished off their Conference Carolinas weekend sweep of Pfeiffer University with a 9-4 victory in Sunday's series-finale at Joe Ferebee Field. The second-ranked Trojans improve to 43-4 overall, 20-3 in league action while dropping the Falcons to 18-29, 11-11.
Pfeiffer struck first in the opening frame after getting out of a jam in the top half of the frame as a one-out walk to Jon Gray, followed by a stolen base, throwing error on the ensuing throw and eventual wild pitch, the Falcons put the first run up without the benefit of a hit in the first inning.
In the five-run third, Mount Olive would take advantage of two defensive mistakes on sacrifice bunt attempts and then string together four-straight singles to help grab their 5-1 lead. The Falcons would get two of the runs back in their half of the third as Aarin Sharpe reached on a hit by pitch and trotted around on Izzy Perez's opposite-field two-run shot down the right field line.
On the third pitch of the fourth, Zak Orrison would immediately get a run back for Mount Olive sending a solo blast to left for a 6-3 advantage. Mount Olive would soon add three more in the sixth as Mike Mercurio took off with a two-run homer to left capping off the frame. Tyler Summers would then get a run back with a monstrous solo blast to left-center cutting the Trojan lead down to 9-4. Very next inning moving to third, Summers would make the defensive play of the weekend for the Falcons diving to his left and making a quick throw to first to record the out.
Pfeiffer will now look towards their 2013 regular season finale on Tuesday hosting UNC Pembroke beginning at 4:00 p.m. from Joe Ferebee Field. Live stats will be available courtesy of http://www.gofalconsports.com.
