WOMEN'S SOCCER PREDICTED TO FINISH FOURTH IN CONFERENCE CAROLINAS

MISENHEIMER, NC - The Pfeiffer University women’s soccer team has been picked to finish fourth in the Conference Carolinas in a pre-season head coaches vote, the league announced on Tuesday. The Lady Falcons return 14 players, including nine of their top 11 scorers from last year’s squad. Pfeiffer has gone 22-8-5 in Conference Carolinas play over the past three seasons.

The 2012 Lady Falcons knocked off top-seeded Lees-McRae in the conference tournament and came one goal shy of being crowned champions. Coach Elijah Denton’s team finished the campaign with a 10-7-2 record overall and a 7-2-2 mark in conference play. Pfeiffer was especially tough at home, losing only one of eight games played in Misenheimer. The Lady Falcons went on a late season tear, going 6-0-2 over its final eight games leading to the Conference Championship game.

Pfeiffer will be led by sophomore Aaliyah Jackson, last year’s Freshman of the Year. Jackson, who was also named to the NSCAA All-Southeast Region’s third team, led the league with 12 goals scored and finished second with 24 points. Eight of her goals were scored in conference play and four were game-winners.

Also returning is midfielder Kayla Rodriguez. Rodriguez led the team with five assists, and finished second to Jackson with four goals and 13 points, while earning a spot on the Conference All-Tournament team.

“We have a very solid group of returners who are still young,” said fourth-year head coach Elijah Denton. “Last year we had a team of mostly freshmen and sophomores who gained a full year of experience. We also have a strong incoming freshmen class who are fighting for minutes and showing well early on. There are a lot of talented teams in the conference this season.  Every game will be a tough, hard-fought match and anyone can end up at the top of the table when it’s all said and done.”

Belmont Abbey was picked to defend its Conference Carolinas Championship after capturing its record seventh conference title last November. Lees-McRae and Limestone are picked second and third respectively with Pfeiffer and Mount Olive rounding out the top five. King, Converse, Erskine, Barton and North Greenville were selected to finish in the both half of the standings.

The Lady Falcons kick off its season on Sept. 6 when they take on Newberry for a 5:00 p.m. match in the Lenoir-Rhyne Classic. The home slate begins on Sept. 15 as Pfeiffer hosts Queens at 1 p.m. and conference play starts on Sept. 21 when they travel to Bristol, TN to take on King at 2 p.m. Four of the Lady Falcons last six matches take place on N.E Lefko Field.
