MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Pfeiffer University softball team has announced the hiring of Haley Thomas as the team’s assistant coach, announced head coach Chris Vullo. Thomas comes to Misenheimer after an outstanding playing career at Youngstown St. in Youngstown, OH.
Thomas’ arrival on campus in Youngstown was the first step in turning the Penguins’ program around. The team recorded eight wins in her freshman year (2009) but would gone on to record the second most wins in school history in 2012 (29). Thomas, a center fielder, tops the majority of the record books at Youngstown St. She ranks first in career hits and career runs and is second in school history in batting average, home runs and slugging percentage. She also holds the record for most hits, stolen bases and runs in a single season.
In 2012, Thomas was named the Horizon League Player of the Year as well as the Youngstown St. University Female Athlete of the Year. She also garnered NFCA Midwest All-Region Second Team honors and was an All-American candidate, while being the team’s SAAC representative. She finished the 2012 season with a .431 batting average, .701 slugging percentage, 42 runs scored, 72 hits, nine home runs and 40 RBI’s, while going 15-for-16 in stolen base attempts.
“I am very excited about adding Haley to our coaching staff,” said Vullo. “She will be working with the outfields and also coach hitting. She had an outstanding career and her experience and success will only benefit our program.”
Thomas, originally from Simi Valley, Calif., earned her bachelor’s in Physical Education.
