BUSTER SCORES IN FINAL MOMENTS TO PROPEL WOMEN'S SOCCER TO 2-1 VICTORY

GAFFNEY, SC – Standout freshman Brae Buster scored with 33 seconds left in double overtime to propel the Pfeiffer University women’s soccer team (4-3, 2-0 Conference Carolinas) to a come-from-behind victory over Limestone (3-3-1, 1-1 CC) on Wednesday afternoon. The 2-1 victory gave the Lady Falcons their fourth straight win on the season and they haven’t lost since falling 2-1 at UNC Pembroke on Sept. 11.

The conference’s top two goal scorers were on display at Saints Field on a cloudy afternoon as Gabriella Reid and Buster squared off. Reid struck first for Limestone, in the 8th minute of play. Reid took a through ball from teammate Ciera Wall and chipped it over the Kate Halligan who was going for the ball. The strike was Reid’s seventh of the season, tops in Conference Carolinas play.

However, Buster would not be outdone. With her team trailing 1-0 in the second half, Buster took a pass from Mandi Roan and lofted a touch shot through the right side to even the game at one.

Despite having a large advantage in shots, including a 10-1 margin in the second half, the contest would go into two overtime periods. As the clock ticked to the final minute of play, Buster broke away from the defense and beat the keeper 1-on-1 to the right post for her fifth score of the season and the first game-winner of her career.

Pfeiffer held a commanding 18-6 advantage in shots and an 11-3 margin in corner kicks. They controlled play most of the afternoon, and would have won easily if not for some strong play by Saints’ keeper Mariette Martinez who made 10 saves.

Halligan made two stops to improve to 3-3 on the year.

The Lady Falcons have now scored 14 goals in seven contests on the season. They have the third highest total in the conference and the nine goals allowed by the Pfeiffer defense is the second lowest total.

The Lady Falcons return to action on Sept. 28 when they host Belmont Abbey on Homecoming weekend at Pfeiffer. The match is slated for a 2 p.m. kickoff and both teams will come into the contest at 2-0 in conference play.
