MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Pfeiffer University men’s tennis team (1-0) defeated visiting Catawba (1-2) in its season opener. The Falcons dominated singles play, winning five of six, en route to a 6-3 victory at Knapp Tennis Center.
Catawba took two of three in doubles competition, with the first doubles team of Loic Minery and Axel Woerner grabbing the Falcons victory, 8-4.
In singles action, Pfeiffer was far superior. Minery, Sebastian Wernecke and Stephen Miller all won in straight sets. The most dramatic match of the afternoon was between Jimmy Molina of Pfeiffer and Michael Patch of Catawba in fourth singles. Patch took the first set, 6-3. However, Molina rallied and won the next two sets by identical 7-6 scores. Wrapping up the Pfeiffer victories was Axel Woerner who defeated Jack Mordey in third singles by scores of 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The win was the first for new Pfeiffer Head Coach Justin Fainter.
The Falcons return to action this weekend with a trip to Sumter, SC to compete in the ITA Regional.
