CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS HAVE STRONG SHOWING AT BULLDOG STAMPEDE

MENS RESULTS WOMENS RESULTS

WINGATE, NC- Pfeiffer’s Cross Country teams competed in the Bulldog Stampede hosted by Wingate University on Saturday morning. Each team raced strong, with the women finishing third, while the men took home second place.

On the women’s side, Pfeiffer finished behind Wingate and UNC Pembroke, both strong programs.

"We knew Wingate and Pembroke were going to be tough to beat,” said Head Coach Scott Nolt. “They're both ranked in the top five in the region, and we saw how good Pembroke was two weeks ago.”

Pfeiffer finished just ten points in front of Francis Marion University in fourth. Carson Newman, Catawba, Coker, St. Andrews, and Johnson C Smith finished out the field.

For the second race in a row, Cori Newton led the way for Pfeiffer finishing in 18th overall with the time of 21:17.

Justine Serje and Janna Featherstone finished within six seconds of each other and 24th and 25th overall, with times of 22:02 and 22:08. Mary Stegall was 29th with a time of 22:26 and Christie Baran rounded out the top five for Pfeiffer with a time of 22:50.

"The women had a good day today. We wanted to see how we compared to the top teams in the field and we felt that we would be strong against them," said Nolt.

The men's cross country team finished second behind UNC Pembroke. Pfeiffer finished just in front of host Wingate University in the nine-team field.

Freshman Chris Laughlin led the way for the Falcons finishing third overall with a time of 28:25 on the 8-k course in his first collegiate cross country race.

"Chris has looked great from the first day he stepped on campus. He usually leads the way in practice, so I wasn’t at all surprised he did the same in his first competition" remarked Nolt.

Laughlin was backed up by two of his freshman teammates; Josh Wilhoit finished eighth overall with a time of 28:54 and Nick Owens 12th with a time of 29:05.

Sophomore Dillon Edwards also made his debut for Pfeiffer finishing fourth on the team and in 17th overall place with the time of 29:36. Brandon Garren rounded out the top five for Pfeiffer finishing 22nd with a time of 30:02. Teammate Henry Furman was just five seconds behind in 24th.

Both teams have two weeks to get ready for their next race, the Hagan Stone classic on October 5 in Greensboro.
