SALISBURY, N.C. - In their season opener, the Pfeiffer men's basketball team (0-1) was defeated by Lenoir-Rhyne (1-0). The Bears outscored Pfeiffer 48-25 in the second half, en route to an 85-59 victory on Saturday night at Catawba College.
Freshman Mike Smith led Pfeiffer with 16 points and Mark Goods added 10. R.J. McClure scored a game-high 22 for the Bears, one of three players in double figures.
Pfeiffer shot 38.8 percent from the field and committed 24 turnovers on the evening.
Lenoir-Rhyne used an early 11-0 lead to take an 11-2 lead before back-to-back threes from Matt Ellwood and Mark Goods. Pfeiffer cut the lead to 27-23 on a fast break layup from A.J. Clark but Lenoir-Rhyne answered with a three to extend the lead to seven. A 9-2 run by the Falcons tied the game at 32 with under four minutes left in the half. The Bears closed the half with a spurt and held a 37-34 advantage going into the break. Eight different Falcons scored a field goal in the first 20 minutes, led by seven from Goods.
The second half belonged to Lenoir-Rhyne, shooting a torrid 55.2 percent from the field and knocking down 6-of-11 three pointers.
The Falcons are back in action tomorrow as they take on the host Catawba Indians at 2 p.m.
