The NCAA recently announced that Micki Thompson, Pfeiffer University's Senior Associate Athletic Director, Director of Compliance, and Senior Woman Administrator, has been selected to serve on the Division II Management Council. She begins her four-year term in January 2014, immediately following the National Convention in San Diego.
The Division II Management Council is responsible for the day-to-day operation of Division II, according to NCAA policy. The council implements policies adopted by the NCAA’s Executive Committee and the Division II President’s Council; makes recommendations to the President’s Council on matters it deems appropriate; recommends the adoption of amendment, administrative bylaws and regulations to govern Division II; and reviews appeals by member institutions of decisions made by a Division II committee or the NCAA staff regarding the application of NCAA legislation. It is comprised of one member from each of the active Division II conferences - as well as one member from Division II independent institutions and two at-large members - for a total of 27 participants; including chief executive officers, faculty athletics representatives, athletic directors, conference representatives and senior woman administrators. The council meets quarterly - once in the spring, summer and fall, and then at the annual NCAA Convention.
“The Management Council plays an important role in ensuring that the legislation, experiences and competitive interests of student-athletes are fair and equitable, and protect the integrity of collegiate sports,” said Thompson. “I am proud and honored to be chosen to represent Conference Carolinas and Pfeiffer University on this distinguished council. I look forward to serving DII institutions and student athletes in this position and will continue to put their welfare first.”
“We are delighted for Micki to have this opportunity,” said Athletic Director Bob Reasso. “The management council is critical for the daily operations of the NCAA and it’s great for Pfeiffer to be recognized on that level. Micki is a great professional and I couldn’t be happier for her.”
Thompson’s selection as the Conference Carolinas representative on the NCAA Division II Management Council is a first for Pfeiffer University. She is currently in charge of all aspects of a complete compliance program for NCAA Division II, Conference Carolinas and University rules and regulations overseeing 18 athletic teams. She is also Director of Women’s Sports and manages business operations activities for the Department of Athletics in conjunction with the Director of Athletics.
During Thompson’s 14 year tenure at Pfeiffer, she has served as the Assistant Athletic Director, Athletics Operations Manager, Assistant Director of Compliance, Motor Fleet Administrator, Department of Sports Information supervisor, interim cross country coach, NCAA DII Southeast Regional Advisory Committee Member for women’s golf, adjunct professor and advisor to the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). She is also a 2012 Graduate of the NACWAA Institute for Administrative Advancement, East Region.
Additionally, from 2007-2009 Thompson was a facilitator for the NCAA DII Leadership Academy. She was one of twelve administrators to help educate and engage student-athletes, coaches and administrators from across the country in various aspects associated with leadership and personal development.
Thompson received her undergraduate (’91) and graduate (’07) degrees from Pfeiffer earning a BS in criminal justice and sociology and a MSL in organizational change and leadership. She resides in Ablemarle with her husband Ashley and has two children; Abby and Jake.
