MISENHEIMER, NC – Behind 25 point from freshman Mike Smith, the Pfeiffer men’s basketball team (5-15, 2-8 CC) completed a season sweep of Lees-McRae (6-13, 1-8 CC) with a 95-90 victory on Saturday evening. Matt Ellwood’s three pointer in the corner with 1:43 to play gave Pfeiffer a 92-90 lead and the Falcon defense allowed only one field goal in the game’s final 2:57 to secure the win.
David McNair narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds, while AJ Clark added 15 points. Silvere Aluko was a force in the paint defensively with four monstrous blocks, and added nine points and five rebounds.
The Falcons hit 10 three pointers in the contest, led by three from Ellwood, who finished with 13 points. Charlie Wagoner also knocked down two triples to provide a lift off the bench.
Pfeiffer shot 42.9 percent from the field and led the rebounding battle 53-48.
Mike Chambers scored 24 for the Bobcats and Raul Tutton had 14.
Pfeiffer led by as much as 13 in the second half, but the Bobcats would rally to take their first lead of the game with 2:57 to go. McNair would knock down a jumper on Pfeiffer’s next possession, but Darius Smith answered with a layup on the other end. With the Bobcats leading 90-89, AJ Clark drove the lane and dished to an open Ellwood who drained the three pointer. McNair and Clark would convert free throws the stretch to seal the victory.
The Falcons return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 5 when they host Mount Olive for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
