COLUMBUS, G.A. - The Pfeiffer University softball team opened the 2014 season on Friday night, dropping a closely fought contest to Columbus State, 3-0. The matchup was the first of five games for the Falcons this weekend as Pfeiffer has drawn doubleheaders over the next two days of the Cougar Classic. With the loss, the Falcons drop to 0-1 on the young season and Columbus State improves to 5-2 overall. The win is credited to Columbus State's Kristen Carr and is her first of the season. Sophomore hurler Sam Jarmusch falls to 0-1 on the season with the loss for the Falcons.
Following the loss, Pfeiffer Head Coach Chris Vullo said that Columbus State is one of the best hitting teams the Falcons will face all season. Behind a solid defensive effort and miserly pitching, Pfeiffer was able to keep the matchup scoreless through the first half of play. The Falcons held Columbus State to just one hit over the course of the first three innings, and Jarmusch finished with three strikeouts.
The game started to break for the Cougars in the fourth inning when Casey Cooge doubled to right center field. Cooge would advance to third on a stolen base and eventually score on a single to left center by Carr. Columbus State would put two on the board in the fourth and tally one run in the sixth to take the victory.
Offensively the Falcons were lead by junior Lindsey Russell who bested all players with three hits for the game.
Pfeiffer returns to action tomorrow at noon when they take on Tusculum in their first matchup of the day. Following the Tusculum game the Falcons will take the field against Wingate at 2:30 pm.
