TIGERVILLE, SC - The Pfeiffer women's basketball team (4-18, 3-11 CC) withstood a furious comeback attempt from North Greenville (7-15, 3-11) to secure an 86-79 win on Saturday afternoon. The road victory was Pfeiffer's first of the season and pulled the Falcons into an eighth-place tie with North Greenville with five games to play as the top eight in the conference advance to the post-season tournament.
The Falcons led by as many as 23 points on three different occasions but North Greenville surged back to take a two point lead with just over three minutes in regulation. Pfeiffer outscored the Crusaders 14-7 over the game's final three minutes to win.
With the game tied at 12, the Falcons used an 8-0 run to go ahead 20-12. The Crusaders cut the lead to 20-17 before Pfeiffer used a 28-8 run to take a 48-25 advantage. In the spurt, Pfeiffer held the Crusaders to only one field goal in 8:10. North Greenville was able to cut into the deficit with a 7-0 run as Pfeiffer went into the break with a 48-32 lead. Carter Williams poured in 17 first half points and hit five three point field goals. Amy Steller added 12 points in just six minutes of play.
A jumper by Ariana Tillman gave Pfeiffer a 62-45 lead with 11:05 to play but the hosts responded with a 9-0 run. Alyssa Harvell's jumper with 7:29 to play pushed the lead back to double-digits at 68-57 with seven-and-a-half minutes to go. Over the next 4:21, North Greenville outscored Pfeiffer 17-4 and a three point play from Aliyah Stokes gave the Crusaders a 74-72 lead, their first since having an 11-9 advantage with 14:37 to play in the first half. Tillman answered with a basket to tie the game and Alexis Stallard scored a basket and hit a free throw to give Pfeiffer a 77-74 lead. Stokes tied the game with a three pointer but North Greenville wouldn't convert another field goal the rest of the way. Stallard's layup with 1:13 to play gave the Falcons the lead for good. Stallard and Williams combined for Pfeiffer's last eight points of the game.
For the day, Williams scored 23 points and added seven rebounds. Stallard and Tillman finished with 15 points apiece.
Hope posted a double-double for the Crusaders with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Timisty Nelson scored 19 points along with eight rebounds and five assists.
Pfeiffer shot 47.6 percent from the field, their best showing since shooting 52.2 percent against Catawba in their second game of the season.
The Falcons return to action on Wednesday night when Barton comes to town. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
